November 2024: Telling Our Story Is Even More Important Now

Family,

To be an immigrant and refugee in this country right now is heavy. There’s a real feeling of being misunderstood and misrepresented, especially in today’s political climate. A lot of frustration builds up when you’re portrayed as a source of problems, instead of part of the solution you’re working so hard to contribute to. It’s the narrative that’s off.

For people who come to the United States with a vision, with drive, with entrepreneurial spirit, this narrative that is currently being depicted of us is exhausting. It doesn’t value my contributions or those that have been added by my family, my friends, and my community. The focus is on what might be our differences instead of on what we’re contributing. And my friends, my family, if you’re feeling this same way, please know that your experiences, resilience, and contributions are living proof of the good that immigrants and refugees bring to this country. Never forget that.

There’s a long history of people who were once labeled as “problems” becoming some of the biggest drivers of change and success in this country. And it’s so important to ensure that refugees and immigrants are involved in the decision-making that’s directly impacting our lives. We need to see more of us in the rooms of people who are making decisions about our lives.

Until then, keep pushing your narrative. Keep showing that you’re part of the solution. And please don’t forget that we’re here. If you need a space to see those positive contributions, if you need a warming meal, and especially if you need to find strength in community, come to Baobab Fare.

Speaking of community, my good friend Jonathan Peregrino recently opened JP Makes and Bakes just across the street from us in New Center! I know the struggle of opening a business and especially since he went through the same journey that we did. Working through a partnership with Hatch, raising money through pop-ups, working with Motor City Match and Midtown Inc. I know how hard it is to accomplish all of that and get the doors open. But he did it! And we’re so excited to welcome him and his bakeshop to our community here in New Center. His ube brownie is one of my favorites. It’s so beautiful and rich. Plus, it pairs really well with our coffee. It’s been my favorite little treat these past few mornings.

As I reflect on how amazing and disheartening life can be all at once, I’m realizing the piece of the puzzle that Baobab Fare can be. Right now we’re taking a breath and sharing meals with our family. Really appreciating everything we have and how grateful we are for every bit of it. And as the holidays approach we’re shifting our focus to sharing our comfort flavors with larger groups through catering. Reach out to us if you’d like us to become a part of your traditions and celebrations! (You’ll be able to order right from our website starting next week.)

Thank you for allowing us this space to reinvigorate and hopefully inspire. And know that we’re working hard every day to give back and show our thanks and appreciation. We love you.
