Voted Best New Restaurant 2022, the East African restaurant, market, and street food pop-up brings a touch of African fare to Detroit, because Detroit Ni Nyumbani – Detroit is Home.
More than a restaurant, Baobab Fare is a gathering space where all are welcome and embraced. Baobab Fare is an East African restaurant offering food that honors traditional dishes served in Burundi, the birthplace of husband-and-wife owners Nadia Nijimbere and Hamissi Mamba. The restaurant resides at the intersection of Woodward Avenue and Grand Boulevard and is a safe space for immigrants and Detroiters alike and a community space where all are welcomed and embraced. Mamba and Nijimbere are passionate about giving back to their native Burundi, and the market at Baobab Fare stocks coffee beans imported from Burundi and roasted in Detroit, in addition to other items from artists and makers that reside in both locations. You are not only our guest you are our family. Thank you for being here as we share our East African fare, culture, and community.

“Detroit welcomed us as refugees. That is important because it became our home. A place that welcomed us with open arms and because of that we have the responsibility to encourage enrichment of the city, through immigration from international countries. We also share our stories and many others through our food, and through our community space. It’s where conversations and understanding intersect.”
– Hamissi Mamba, Co-Owner

Every recipe begins in Baobab Fare’s kitchen. With the increased demand of retail products, Soko — the East African market, built a partnership with Lanovara Food Distributors in Rochester, New York.

Mamba and Nadia of Baobab Fare accredit much of their success to Freedom House Detroit. It was the first place that literally welcomed them home, here in Detroit. To give back to Freedom House — Baobab Fare is raising funds to build out a new kitchen.

Soko is an East African Market that shares and uplifts East African culture. There’s a stigma to the perception of African culture, and our market will showcase artists and products through creative and beautiful designs that represent our people. We want to introduce our home to our culture. And because people are asking for more, Baobab Fare is making more East African products!
Affordability and accessibility are found in street food. Baobab Fare is bringing delicious short limited menus of East African street food through Waka. Waka is a food truck, catering service, and togo spot that serves the flavors of Baobab Fare in an accessible way. Through a more curated menu larger groups will be able to enjoy a variety of changing dishes that are commonly served on the streets of East Africa, while highlighting the local fare found in and around Detroit.
Looking for catering, to book the food truck or a private space, or connect and learn more about our journey from Burundi to Detroit? We’d love to hear from you!
